Tuesdays Soccer – By Chris.

Champions League, return leg

Inter  -  Liverpool         1.93  -   4.75
It was a strange game between Inter and Reggina at the weekend. Reggina played all the best football but Inter were 2-0 winners. Needless to say J Cesar, the Inter keeper, was man of the match. Ibrahimovic made his come back and he also had a good game, one of the few positive Inter players that day. This game looks like a hopeless task for Inter, already being 0-2 down after the first leg. The problem with Inter is their inability to keep clean sheets. They do not play that kind of football. Should Liverpool score and I think they will, then Inter have to score four goals to advance to the quarter final. The Inter defence looks far from perfect with  Materazzi, Maxwell and Cordoba out of the picture. We will probably see Zanetti, Burdisso, Chivu and Maicon from the start. Far from ideal, with both Chivu and Burdisso best described as safety risks.

Since the first leg Liverpool have won four league games and scored thirteen goals, while Inter have lost to Napoli and played this dull affair with Reggina. D Kuyt and Babel were on the bench at the weekend, when Liverpool defeated Newcastle 3-0. Mascherano was injured during the game, but he is included in tomorrow's squad together with Kuyt and Babel of course. S Finnan is out, injured.

I cannot figure out the odds in this fixture. How come Inter are such a low price? (1.93). I must have missed something. Ibrahimovic seldom excels in high profile games, Cruz has not played lately, Crespo and Suazo are out of form, Figo and Vieira have lost it and so on. Am I too negative? Maybe, but the odds have nothing to do with the current form. I can see Torres getting one or two chances tomorrow, probably sent through by Gerrard. I have to back the away win. (4.75)

Inter 0 Liverpool 1

The Championship

Sheffield Utd   -   Coventry        2.03  -   4.00
Surely the home side should be too strong for Coventry (2.03). United took four points from their difficult away fixtures at Ipswich and Plymouth last week and could be that we will finally witness something like a positive run by the club. It never happened when B Robson was the boss, but my feeling is that Blackwell will do better. Chris Morgan is a major injury doubt and I guess that Ehiogu could be replacement. J Beattie up front of course, probably together with Billy Sharp.

Coventry took an essential three pointer against Norwich at the weekend. Their task was made easier as Norwich finished the match with only nine men. Unchanged Coventry side tomorrow. Likely home win (2.03).

Sheffield Utd 2 Coventry 1

Scunthorpe   -   Plymouth     2.86   -   2.71
I will be backing the away win (2.71). Plymouth lost their home game against Sheffield United the other day but there was absolutely nothing wrong with their effort or their football. The United keeper P Kenny had an outstanding match. One enforced change in the Plymouth squad is that centre back Timar is out suspended and he will be replaced by M Seip.

Scunthorpe continue without the suspended M Sparrow. G Horsfield came on as a substitute at the weekend, when they lost 0-2 to Hull but it sounds as if Horsfield will play from the start this time. Plymouth are aiming for the play offs, they win as many away games as home games and Scunthorpe are destined to be relegated. My choice will be the away win (2.71).

Scunthorpe 1 Plymouth 0

Southampton   -   Leicester       2.28   -   3.41
Six pointer game at the foot of the table between these old giants. Southampton have drawn their last four league games including their last match at Blackpool. They have been troubled by injuries all season long and it stays that way. A Davies was injured at the weekend and he will be missing tomorrow. Keeper K Davis also risks missing his second straight game, with their third choice keeper expected to play. Idiakez is not expected to recover.

Leicester were all over B City at the weekend and it was a small wonder that they could not win against the league leaders. They missed so many chances, but in all fairness, scoring goals has become increasingly difficult for the club. Tomorrow it looks like their defender  J Clapham will be missing with J Mattock his likely replacement. P Kisnorbo could earn a bench role. S Clemence has not recovered yet. In their last away game Leicester deservedly defeated Cardiff. X2 this one, I will give my support to the away win (3.41).

Southampton 1 Leicester 0
