Tuesdays Soccer – By Chris.

Champions League, quarter finals, second leg

Chelsea   -   Fenerbahce         1.33   -   12.42
I thought that Chelsea were the much better side in the first leg, but surely the bookmakers have overreacted this time. The 1.33 represents the worst value that I have seen for quite some time. Outplayed for an hour in Istanbul, Fenerbahce finished the match the stronger side and were able to win the first leg 2-1. In other words they come to London well aware of the fact that they ended the game the better side. Expect the same Fenerbahce squad tomorrow plus the returning right back Gökhan. R Carlos made his come back at the weekend but maybe he is not yet ready for a match on this level. He has travelled with the squad so you never know. Alex, Kezman, Deivid, likely starters, with Kazim and Senturk on the bench.

P Cech will be missing again for Chelsea as he suffered some kind of head injury in the last training session. The keeper was poised to return before this latest set back. Count on Drogba, J Cole, Carvalho and Ballack to play from the start again. They were bench players or not even that at the weekend. Likely home win, but quite impossible odds (1.33).

Chelsea 2 Fenerbahce 0

Liverpool    -   Arsenal        2.43    -    3.50
Many Arsenal players have complained about the defensive approach from Liverpool in their two meeting this last week, both ending in 1-1 draws. It seems to work for Liverpool and the fantastic thing is that they do not need to play an offensive game tomorrow either. Arsenal need a result in this second leg, while the 0-0 draw sends Liverpool to the semi final. A bit ironic really that Liverpool could play a defensive game at Anfield, their European fortress. I am not saying that they will do that, just pointing out the possibility of a cautious approach from Benitez' side in this second leg. Mascherano, Gerrard, Torres and rest will all be back for tomorrow's game. J Pennant is out.

It is been a while since we saw a big game from the Arsenal star Fabregas. He is not the only Arsenal player short of his best form and that is why I cannot really see my team succeeding tomorrow. There is something about Liverpool at the moment, they seem to be in better physical shape, the stronger team. Diaby will be back for the Gunners but Van Persie is considered a major doubt. The penalty that never was given to Arsenal in the first leg could prove to be the decisive factor in this quarter final series.  1X in my opinion but I will opt for the home win. Decent odds! (2.43).

Liverpool 3 Arsenal 1

The Premiership

West Ham    -   Portsmouth        2.40   -   3.00
No game for West Ham at the weekend while Portsmouth advanced to the FA Cup final by defeating WBA 1-0 at Wembley. The question is of course, will the Portsmouth players be able to motivate themselves for this postponed league fixture? If they do they should not lose to the Hammers. West Ham have struggled against Pompey these last couple of years, no win in their last five meetings. B Zamora, F Sears, G McCartney and J Pantsil are all in contention for this match, but F Ljungberg will definitely be missing. M Upson could possibly be involved.

Portsmouth will be without both their first choice strikers J Defoe and Kanu. M Baros and D Nugent will do their best to replace them, but no doubt that Pompey look a little light weight up front. I used to like Nugent, but he has not really been playing much this season.  H Hreidarsson will probably be rested with Lauren deputising in defence. West Ham should be the hungrier side tomorrow and I will let this assumption govern my bet. Yes, also the fact that Pompey will be missing those strikers. Home win (2.40).

West Ham 0 Portsmouth 1
