Racing
The St. Ledger, 3.45 York. My favourite Classic, but the least fashionable as nobody loves a stayer these days. At 1m 6f it is a test of stamina and the race should be run at good pace today at York, not the usual venue, Doncaster. York is regarded as a good track for those horses that to race up with the pace, so perhaps not ideal for 2nd favourite Red Rocks, who likes to pounce at the last moment. The big worry for favourite Sixties Icon is the stables poor run of results, something like 20 runners without a winner, hardly inspiring confidence at 13/8 and enough to put me off despite the excellent record of favourites in this race. One horse who will be up at the front is Galient, a horse who has won on good to firm ground and was a very creditable 2nd to Soapy Danger over 2 miles at Royal Ascot. Likes the ground, will get the trip and is a big price. Current form is the worry, but the trainer is confident he will be better than in his last outing. 1 point e/w Galient @ 25/1 generally available. lost 2 points. |
