Golf - Malaysian Open. Not quite the same quality of the ‘Middle East Swing’ but still a decent field for this weeks Euro-Asian event. The Saujana course is not long but it is hilly, has meandering palm tree lined fairways and the 100mm rough is lush after recent rains. Clearly it puts premium on accuracy but the winner will have to be able to cope with the hot and humid conditions. The grainy greens hold the key to winning as they are small, very grainy and undulating, experience of the course is a must. Asian tour players will be much more comfortable in the conditions, but there are plenty of Europeans with experience of these conditions. 2 points win Thongchai Jaidee @ 8/1 generally available lost 2 points Jaidee’s claims stand out like a sore thumb. He is in great form and has won this event the last two times it has been held on this course. The bets odds of 8/1 are hardly inspiring but he really has everything going for him. 1 point e/w Maarten Lafeber @ 40/1 generally available. lost 2 points Lafeber is one of the straightest players on the European tour from tee to green, so the course will suit. His big weakness is his putting, but his fine 10th place in Dubai has week saw a much better performance with the short stick (ranked 3rd for putting). If he can keep that sort of touch on these greens, he could better his 7th place in 2001. He has great form in Singapore, on a course with a similar premium on accuracy and played in the same weather conditions. 4 points Lafeber to beat Bjorn @ 6/5 with Hills. lost 4 points The worst run of match bet tipping in the history of golf continued last week, but the worm will turn eventually! Bjorn shot a 3rd round 66 in Dubai and ended up a good 10th, but that was on one of his favourite courses and nearly a ‘home’ event as he is a long time resident of Dubai. He finished 24th here in 2005, after an excellent opening two rounds, he wilted with a 73-77 finish. His accuracy off the tee is poor and that will put pressure on the rest of his game. |
