Ryder Cup Singles. All matches must be played to a conclusion, so even then the ties become a dead rubber, the players will have to finish until a result is found. That is not say there may be some funny results in the latter matches, if Europe have wrapped it early, which is very likely. A 4 point lead is not impossible for the USA to overcome, but long gone are the days when the Europeans went into the singles as nervous wrecks, facing players ranked way above them. The Europeans are now very much the equals and recent results show the two teams scoring being very close in the singles. With the chance of the last few matches being dead rubbers, one man worth opposing is Phil Mickelson. He is well know for throwing in the towel when he is out of contention and I can not see him being remotely interested in his tie if the show is already finished. He has not being playing particularly well this week, or indeed since he blew the US Open with a double bogey on the 18th. Mickelson is geared to play majors, the rest is just battlefield practice. He will be keen to get this weekend over, get back home and get some serious closed season eating going on. Olazabal is a Ryder Cup legend having 17 wins, 8 losses and 7 halves from 30 matches. His putter was looking very hot yesterday and perhaps the Europeans are happier on these greens that have been kept on the slow side. Admittedly Olazabal has a poor singles record, just 1 win and 1 draw from 6. Mickelson on the other hand has won 9 from 24, with 9 halves and 11 lost. In singles he has won 3 lost 2. He has played all 4 rounds so far and has just half a point to show for it, so he will be tried, lacking motivation and is not playing well. Olazabal to improve his singles record. 4 points Olazabal to beat Mickelson @ 2.40 with Betfair. won 5.6 points Garcia has been on fire this weekend. The Ryder Cup is his stage and if he could keep this mindset for ordinary golf, he might actually win more events and maybe a major. His singles record is great - played 15 won 10. Cink (singles played 7 won 2 lost 4) was called in as captains pick and has played ok, 3 halves from 4, but the passion in the Serge is awesome, he is even putting well! His match is out early and will be very much in the ‘alive’ part of the overall competition, so there will be full motivation. 8 points Garcia to beat Cink @ 1.75 with Betfair lost 8 points |
