European Open – K Club, Ireland. The main feature of this weekends tournament will be the foul weather. Thursday and Friday look horrible. Wet and windy on Thursday and windy again on Friday. The weekend will be a little better, cloudy, less wind but a chance of thunder storms. The lead up has also seen a lot of rain falling so the course will be playing long. Accuracy into the greens will also be vital and this looks like an event for long driving players who can play well in bad weather. Not a great betting event with such a poor forecast. Last season the weather was similar for the final two days and there were 8 or so players who played well in the worst of the conditions. Included were Andres Romero, Simon Dyson and Peter Hanson. The Irish Open back in May was not blessed with great weather either, especially on the Thursday when we saw good scores from Romero, Dyson and Hanson. This suggests that these guys can play well in poor conditions on this very course. 0.5 point e/w Andres Romero @ 66/1 generally available. lost 1 point Big off the tee and has shown promise on the course and in the conditions. Missed the cut in France last week but previous to that his form figures are 6/4/12/22, so he is in good form. This guy has great potential and was 8th in last years Open, so he should like this links style layout. 0.5 point e/w Peter Hanson @ 40/1 Paddy Power (e/w first 6 places) Won 4.5 points Not huge of the tee, but at around 290 yards, pretty long. This great strength is accuracy to the greens. Sadly he is a poor putter, but this weeks conditions should suit him. 30th in the US Open and 11th last time out show him to be in good form and hew as 9th here last year. 0.5 points Simon Dyson @ 66/1 Boylesports, Paddy Power (both e/w top 6) lost 1 point Hinted at a return to his great early season form with 11th in Germany two weeks ago. 9th here last year, his stats suggest that he will not like the course but the conditions should suit and he won on a links like course in Holland last year. AT&T National – Congressional Course. A course more used to hosting majors than normal tour events. A good quality field, but question marks over the big three of Woods, Mickelson and Singh. New dad Woods would probably not be here is it wasn’t the event set up to support his own foundation. Mickelson is still not 100% fit as his wrist is still giving some pain and Singh is recovering from an ankle injury. 0.5 point e/w Bubba Watson @ 66/1 generally available. lost 1 point 5th in the recent US Open, Bubba showed that he is more than just a big hitter (driving distance is an advantage here) and it shouldn’t be over looked that he has finished in the pay out places 4 times this season. Unfortunately he blows hot and cold and is as likely to miss the cut as to play well, you just never know, but if he carry is form from Oakmont to this former US Open course, he could well go close again. |
