Golf - Malaysian Open.
A new venue for the European tour but the Asian Tour
has been to the Kota Permai G.C. before so ‘the
locals’ could have a slight advantage. The course
looks similar to last weeks venue in India, very
American in style, lots of water and bunkers but it
is short by modern standards at 6979 yards. The par
5’s will be reachable in two for the big hitters and
so long as they can keep out of the water you have
fancy that this will be a real bombers course and
the long drivers you have a good week with the
putter could go very well.
Two of last weeks selections went well but both let
winning chances slip away. Randhawa ticks all the
right boxes once again but I am starting to have my
doubts as to his mental toughness. There is no
denying he has a great all round game, long off the
tee, good iron player and a good putter, but he can
go from the sublime to the ridiculous when the
prospect of winning arises. His current form is good
with four top 10 finishes from his last six events
but he should have won the last two and despite the
fact that he has won over this course, I will give
him a miss this week.
Johan Edfors came with a late run but three putting
the last two greens ended his chances but I feel
that he be feeling good after a final round 65
showed that he can shoot very low rounds when in
form. This looks like another course that will suit
his attacking style, hugely long off the tee and
accurate to the greens, it is just a putter that
blows hot and cold that has prevented him winning
his fourth event. Three top 5 finishes from his last
six events more than hint that he is back to his
best and even though his odds are much shorter than
last week, he looks worth another punt.

We have been on Rory McIlroy a few times without any
joy but he remains very much in the winner about to
happen catagory. I was going to pass over him due to
a lack experience in this part of the world but he
went out and shot a 63 in the Pro-am and was
positive about the course and his chances. This is
not bad field in terms of talent, but it is not that
strong either and with his very strong all round
game, he has got a realistic chance.

Another bomber off the tee who is showing signs of a
return to form is South African Anton Haig. He is
hopelessly erratic in terms of form but with two top
10 finishes in his last four events and just the one
missed cut, he might just be getting his head down
and will realise his full potential. On a positive
note he has won in Malaysia and Thailand in the last
two years, so he can clearly handle the conditions.

For a couple of real long shots why not have a
tickle on local pro Danny Chia. He was the first
Malaysian to win on the Asian Tour back in 2002 and
has hit a bit of form with two top 5 finishes in his
last three events, including the SAIL Open, not far
behind last weeks winner Mark Brown and 8th
place Randhawa. Huge hitting Pelle Edberg could
blast out a good round as he can putt well on a good
day, but sadly he doesn’t have a clue were his big
drives will end up. Either are strong enough to put
up as a bet, but if you can get a good price on the
exchanges (300 or more), they might be a decent back
to lay.
