British Masters – The Belfry.

1 point e/w Mikko Ilonen @ 50/1 with Ladbrokes.

lost 2 points

A decent price on a player who is already a two time winner on the European Tour this season. He likes playing golf in the British Isles, maybe a result of his first notable win being the British amateur title a few years ago. He has finished top 16th in two Open Championships, 12th at Wentworth this year, 6th at Celtic Manor, 8TH  at Loch Lomand and 15th at the K-Club. His recent form is good (12/6/mc/15/8/40/1/18/13) and now that he has two wins under his belt he will now feel like a real top line player and might well follow in last years winner here, Johan Edfors, and win a third title in a season. He has a good all round game but his greatest strength is his putting, and good putters are always worth following when the rest of the game is in good order.

4 points Paul Lawrie to beat Soren Hansen @ 13/10 with Hills

Last weeks winner is the man in form, but the fact that he won his first tournament for 5 years might just be his weakness. Many players find it hard to follow up a win with another good performance the following week. Looking back to Hansen’s debut win in 2002, came into that event in great form (much like last week) but followed up with a missed cut, before continuing to play well for a while longer.

Lawrie wasn’t to shabby last week himself, finishing 9th and his recent form has been solid, making his last 4 cuts and his only poor round was a 77 in the second round at Gleneagles. The 1999 Open Champion will be one of the few looking forward to the weather conditions forecast for this event, showery, breezy and feeling on the cool side. The players will be changing in and out of the wet weather gear all week and Lawrie admits he loves looking out the window in the morning and seeing a cold , wet day ahead because he knows he can play well in those conditions, whereas  most players hate it.

I expect Lawrie to have another decent week, a top 25 is not unrealistic, while the Dane might just not fancy slogging round in the rain after his big win last week.

5 points Paul Lawrie to beat Ross Fisher @ 10/11 with Stan James

lost 5 points

Backing Lawrie for the reasons given above.

Fisher has won on tour this year, but his game is far from consistent. He has 11 missed cuts from 18 starts in 2007 and is currently on a of run make cut – miss cut. For the last 5 cuts he has made, he has followed up with missing the cut. He made the cut last week, so if the sequence continues, he is due another MC. He certainly has talent, but any player who is missing 50% of his cuts over the last 6 months should be opposed.
