The Players Championship
Sawgrass, Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida Known as the 5th major the players Championship is the first big tournament of the year attracting a strong field. Designed by Pete Dye the course is famous for the 17th island-green where many a ball ends up in the drink and on one occasion a ball was carried off by a seagull! Fred Funk was certainly flying high last year when he pulled-off a shock 200/1 win from Lehman, Verplank and Donald who all tied for 2nd place. With high winds last year, accurate drivers were strongly favoured as they normally are. Sawgrass is a tough course having thick rough and quite narrow fairways. The wind speed will be higher than average this year and there is some chance of rain. Last year the tournament finished on Monday due to bad weather. Value match bet with Boylesports Evens Furyk v Harrington 6 units Furyk is an accurate driver and enjoys difficult courses. Last year he had 14 top 25s and 10 top10s. Harrington had only 6 top25s and 4 top10s although he played fewer tournaments. Campbell 6 units Furyk has played steady golf this year -,-,27,12,33,0,-,20 and has had some high finishes at Sawgrass. Chad Campbell had only 5 top10s last year and missed the cut 5 times. The last 2 years in the Players he has not excelled himself. Value match bet with Ladbrokes Evens Verplank v Harrington 6 units Scott Verplank is the ideal player to back in match bets as he doesn't win many tournaments and as he's very quiet the average punter tends not to notice him or bet on him. He is an accurate driver and is in good form this year -,2,-,51,17,15,-,10 and has played well on the course. Value match bet with Skybet or Totesport 10/11 Clarke v Westwood 6 units Darren Clarke has played well this season and plays every year at Sawgrass. In 2005 he played only 12 tournaments in the States and missed just one cut, had 7 top 25s and 5 top 10s. Westwood played 15 tournaments last year on the PGA Tour missing 3 cuts and had no top 10s Value match bet with Expekt tie no bet 9/10 O'Hern v Pampling 5 units O'Hern has been in good form this season 19,19,22,-,17,-,-,- and came 24th in the Players last year . Pampling won at Bay Hill last week and may lack concentration this week as a result. |
