The Bob Hope Classic
La Quinta , California
Classic Club, PGA West, La
Quinta, Bermuda Dunes.
This is
a pro/am event played over 5 rounds with the amateurs playing the 1st
4 rounds on 4 different courses. The cut occurs after 4 rounds when
the pros play the new host course, the 7305 yard Classic Club, for the
2nd time in the final round. For the 1st 4 rounds the pin placements
are fairly easy so as not to embarrass the amateurs however the fact
that there are 5 rounds means the tournament goes very much to form
and is normally won by a good player. Course form is not as important
this week and longer hitters are favoured slightly. With the new
Classic Club, over 300 yards longer than the others being used twice,
the longer hitters will have a slightly bigger advantage than in years
past.

10/11 Gore v
Duval 9 units
Jason
Gore has had a meteoric rise to fame, starting out on the Nation Wide
Tour where he won 3 consecutive tournaments to catapult himself on to
the main tour. He qualified for the US Open and was doing well until
the final round. Then he made a break-through and won the 84Lumber. He
hasn't started particularly well this year but he has played the Bob
Hope before and in 2001 finished 22nd. Duval played well last week,
however last season he made just 1 cut from 20 starts. That was the
Texas Open where he finished T60. His course form is not good
51,48,0,-,0 , and his temperament may not be suited to the pro/am
format.

Pampling has been doing well down-under in the off-season and has good
course-form -,21,21,9,-.He is 40th on DD which should help a bit on
these courses. Ogilvie is not as good a player as Pampling and is
131st on DD and missed the cut 9 times last year.

Weir
Verplank enjoys playing in the Bob Hope as can be seen by his
figures 4,42,12,20,23 . He is up against 3 players who are a bit
over-rated at the moment. Herron is the danger as he is a long
hitter which may help him on the host course.
