The Sony Open

Waialae CC,  Honolulu,  Hawaii

The Waialae course is quite different from Kapalua as it is shorter and gives little advantage to the long hitters. The course was toughened-up after 98 when John Huston went embarrassingly low to win. Greens are of Bermuda grass like last week but smaller and not as difficult. This is the first full field event of the year so there is a cut after 2 rounds. Course form appears to be very important here as it was last week.

9/10 Bryant               v            Wier                   9 units

Bart Bryant had a very good season last year winning 2 tournaments and finishing 13 times in the top 25.He was 6th on driving accuracy  (DA) which is useful on this course. Weir had a poor 2005 with only 6 top 25s ,missing the cut 9 times from 23 starts. He was 81st on DA . Bryant has the advantage of having played last week when he finished in 9th place.

10/11 Lehman         v           Baddeley           7 units

Tom Lehman still plays to a high standard and has played every year at Waialea for at least the last 5 years. He was 75th on DA last year and missed only 5 cuts. Baddeley has not been playing well for some time ,missing the cut 11 times last year. He was 194th on DA.

Toms 4/1         3 units
Appleby
Scott
Bryant
Howell

Toms has a good record at Waialea finishing 4th and 13th the 2 times he has played. He won a tournament last year and finished 14 times in the top 25. Appleby will be over-rated for awhile after his 3-peat last week. Howell and Scott will get little benefit from their length off the tie.

Maruyama  4/1            3 units
Choi
Cink
V.Taylor
Weir
Rose

Maruyama enjoys Waialea and as played the last 5 years in Honolulu  22,70,7,41,3  . Choi and Cink are a bit out of form at the moment and Weir should be no threat.

Outright:

S. Maruyama at 38 on Betfair             1 unit

The ever smiling Japanese player looks good value .He has won 3 tournaments in the States and his lack of length off the tie wont matter on this course especially has the winds will be quite strong.

Sell Appleby/Toms  .25 - 1.75      with SportingIndex         1 unit  a point

Appleby may still be celebrating his 3-peat and in any case Toms is a better player especially on this course.

Sell Duval/Wie 1.5 - 3           with IG index              1 unit a point

Duval has gone at the game making only one cut last year and Michelle Wie is quite fancied to make the cut this time.
