The Ford Championship at Doral

Doral Resort and Spa ,   Miami ,  Florida

The Doral brings in the start of the Florida swing and has a strong field as usual. Known as the 'Blue Monster' because water features on many of the holes. How it plays is very much determined by the wind which normally blows  all the time in Florida . However last year the course was quite benign with less than average wind speed. The strange thing is , though , long hitters were not favoured although accurate drivers were at some disadvantage. In 2004 and 3003 short hitters prevailed. This year there is also very little wind forecast which may mean ,as last year, that it goes very much to form. The top 5 last year were  Woods, Mickelson, Singh, Zach Johnson and Toms .

10/11  K.Perry           v             JB Holmes                  7 units

Perry has been consistently good for at least the last 3 years . Last year he made 19 of 23 cuts, had 14 top 25s and 7 top 10s. He has had 2 high finishes this year and has played the course 4 out of the last 5 years. Holmes has begun his professional career spectacularly by winning at the Q-school  and the FBR Open 4 weeks ago. But can he continue at this high level. Probably not. He has not played the course before.

Evens         Immelman            v          Parry             7 units

Trevor Immelman  is very consistent and not very well known. He made 10 of 14 cuts last year with 5 top 25s. He has started this season quite well  0,20,-,7,41  , and has played the course before. Parry has done well on this course, winning in spectacular style 2 years ago. However too much can be read into course form and far more important is form over the last year. In 2005, starting with the US Open  'Popeye' missed 5 cuts on the trot and hasn't been playing much recently.  Maybe he has not been eating his spinach !

4/5   K. Perry          v           Kelly                 6 units

Perry should be too consistent for Kelly who came 2nd last week but hardly excelled himself before that  13,53,0,-,0,2  . Kelly missed the cut 9 times last year with 1 retirement.

Langer     9/1       2 units
Goosen
Toms
Love
Parry

Langer tends to be under-rated because of his age, but you can be sure with his great discipline he is keeping himself fit and mentally alert. Also he lives in Florida and plays this tournament every year  .
