Qualifying Update.
It seems I have very different views from the worlds
F1 oddsmakers and will be proved right or wrong very
shortly!
Saturdays free practice times are not to be taken at
face value as the top teams really do not have to do
a Q2 simulation as they are confident that they can
easily get into Q3, so they will be practicing
qualifying runs with enough fuel for the first race
stint in the tanks. Heidfeld was quickest this
morning, 0.8 seconds faster than the fastest
Ferrari. This suggests that BMW did do a Q2
simulation, perhaps worried that after a poor day
yesterday, it was no certainty that they could
cruise into Q3.
If they set that time wit a decent fuel load then
pole is theirs for the taking, but either way they
do look like they can get at least one driver in the
top three on the grid as they have done in two of
the first three GP’s (and would have done in
Malaysia but for the blocking of Heidfeld on his
flying lap) and very possibly pole position.
Heidfeld set the fastest time on the harder tyre so
it could be that there is more to come from him.
McLaren have not really looked on it this weekend
but they will be in the mix later today but BMW do
look like the team who are improving at the fastest
rate and if they take a low fuel strategy into
qualifying they should be very competitive and
certainly they look hugely over priced compared to
their rivals.
