Monaco – Qualifying bets.

It should be a very exciting qualifying session with luck playing a much bigger role than usual. Renault look very quick and I believe they will be hell bent on getting pole position, not just because that is the best place to win from on this track, but because of the death of the CEO of Michelin yesterday. I am sure the team will want to do a good job of getting pole and winning, as a fitting tribute to head of a very important partner of the racing team, and indeed a very important figure in French business.

Perhaps it will be enough to persuade the team to go that little bit lower on fuel to give them an even better chance. Perhaps they might give Fisi the lower load, he is very close to Alonso this week and for him to get pole and then cede the position to Alonso at the first stop, would be very nice business. Alonso may still be able to get pole with a little more fuel on board, so giving Fisi a little help would double their chance of pole. It really looks between those two, Schumacher and Lady Luck.

2 points e/w Fisichella to set fastest qualifying time @ 7/1 with Betfred.

McLaren threatened to be quick after Thursday, but they have dropped back to their usual level. Of the two drivers it has been Montoya who has been faster so far. He is in need of some good results to help his job prospects for 2007 and beyond. Raikkonen on the other hand has job offers coming from everywhere and may well be more focused on getting the best gig for next year sorted out, rather than busting a gut for McLaren. The relationship between team and driver has been strained for some time and his motivation must be in doubt.

4 points Montoya to out qualify Raikkonen @ 6/5 with Stan James.

With Chaos likely, it is probably best to keep the bulk of the bets until after qualifying, so that will be all for now.

Post Qualifying Update:

An amazing piece of parking by Michael Schumacher wins him pole position, or maybe not. There is a stewards enquiry as it looked very much like Mr. Schumacher deliberately parked his Ferrari on the penultimate bend (the name of which he strangely found difficult to remember the name of in the press conference, like he has never driven here before). Under rule 116 b) he should have times removed for deliberately blocking competitors. Villeneuve got a penalty a couple of races back for blocking Fisichella, so the rules are pretty clear and Schumacher should have his fastest time removed.

Of course the FIA are somewhat inconsistent when it comes to Ferrari, well actually they are usually very consistent, consistently helping Ferrari. So despite the rules saying he should get a penalty, it is not nailed on, just very likely. The case for the prosecution will show you this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kb0tyPCGWKY

I find it strange that people are prepared to back Schumacher at 2.2 on Betfair before the stewards decision has been made. History tells us the 'true odds for a pole position driver at Monaco is 6/4, so even if he does not get a penalty, his odds look too short. A classic case for a lay.....
