Malaysian GP – Saturday update.
The weather forecast remains the biggest barrier to
having a decent punt on this race. The forecasters
are still saying thunderstorms blah blah blah, just
like they have been for the whole weekend. But what
have we seen? Nothing for the F1 guys and even the
rain that fell for the GP 2 race this afternoon was
hardly of biblical proportions. The wise punter will
wait until just before the off, or even better, have
a bet in running when the conditions are more
certain. However I am writing this some twelve hours
before the start of the race and I am not paid to
sit on the fence. All I can say is that if it does
rain, lay the favourites or have small stakes on
anything over 50/1.
Today’s qualifying saw the McLarens looking very
much the poor relations to Ferrari. The fact that
both drivers were handed a five place grid penalty
for blocking Heidfeld and Alonso’s final run smacked
of politics, but they have not looked on the pace
anyway. It seems the powers that be have decided
that Ferrari must be given a chance to make up for
the Melbourne farce. Did anyone else see other cars
cruising round while Heidfeld and Alonso were on
their final runs? No. It just must have been me.
Let’s just say that that everything is set up for a
Ferrari win.
Honda have been a good news story in the sense that
everyone expected them to be total rubbish, while in
fact they have managed to get a car that is very
much in the competitive midfield pack. Button is
certainly one of the drivers that could do well in a
damp race (he believes that only chaos will reign if
things get very wet) and even in a dry race he could
score a point. Starting from 11th on the
gird he can choose his best strategy and as a result
of his 1st corner elimination in
Melbourne he has the advantage of a fresh engine and
gearbox. Worth a small interest.
2 points Button to finish in the points @ 6/4 with

Jarno Trulli did a great job to finish 5th
in Q3 and now that the Macca’s have been dumped back
five places he will start from 3rd on the
grid. This is the dirty side of the track and he is
a bit of an enigma in terms of his racing ability as
opposed to his qualifying pace, but 8/1 to finish on
the podium does look a little over priced.
1 point Trulli to finish on the podium @ 7/1 with Extrabet.

This really is not a great betting race. With
question marks about the weather and the reliability
of the front running teams, I find it hard to have
any great enthusiasm about punting on this race. I
will very much look forward to watching it,
especially if we do get rain, but there will be may
better opportunities throughout the season.
