Italian GP – Qualifying.
Ferrari had a bad morning. Raikkonen’s car was
heavily damaged in a huge shunt and his week has now
be badly compromised with so little running
yesterday and today. It looks like the team will
have to but his engine in the back of the spare car,
which of course he has driven at all this weekend.
Perhaps more worrying is that
Massa in the other Ferrari was over 0.5 seconds slower than the
McLaren of Alonso, a big gap.
It was telling that Heidfeld, interviewed earlier,
says he believes that they might be able to compete
with Ferrari this weekend, but made no mention of
McLaren. I would suggest that he knows that they are
just too fast to catch and his target will be third
place.
Pole position looks like its between the two McLaren
drivers and for the last seven qualifying sessions,
it has been Hamilton who has looked by far the
better exponent of the flying lap. Since Monaco,
Alonso has not beaten Hamilton on merit once. He
cheated in Hungary and Hamilton suffered a
mechanical failure in Germany, otherwise it has all
been Hamilton.
Alonso has been quick all weekend, but like some of
the all time greats, Hamilton has that special
ability to find the perfect lap just when he needs
to. He is my favourite for pole, but the bookies say
Alonso. A good time to bet.

For the last qualifying session in Turkey we
successfully opposed Vettel with Liuzzi, banking on
the youngsters lack of time in the car being a big
enough handicap to allow Liuzzi to out qualify him.
This weekend, the young German looks worth backing.
He had plenty of track time here in last weeks test
as well has his time yesterday and this morning. He
will be much more comfortable in the car and can
push harder. He was faster than Liuzzi in the test
and has been faster in all three sessions this
weekend. He is a more talented driver and has the
opportunity to confirm it this afternoon.
