Bahrain Qualifying.
Saturday Free practice has had a very different look
to it this season, all because the cars have to
start the race with the fuel that is left in the
tank. The drivers that expect to get into Q3 will no
problem (Ferrari, McLaren and BMW) do not seem to
bother with low fuel runs on Saturday, hence they
can end up well off the pace. Today we have Rosberg,
Webber, Trulli, Coulthard and Nakajima all in the
top 6, with just Massa up in second for the ‘big
teams’. I think this just underlines that he is
flying on this track and should get pole.
The worry for drivers and punters alike is that the
wind is strong, gusty and changing directions, so
some drivers are going to have a hard luck story if
they get a bad cross wind gust on a tricky corner. I
don’t think it will make it a lottery but I do
remember Barrichello getting an unlikely pole at
Silverstone a few years ago when he got lucky with a
change of wind direction on his flying lap. That
wind looks the biggest danger to Massa.
No further bets at this stage. I was considering
Kovalainen to out qualify Hamilton at 6/4 with Stan
James as the Brit was not really on it this morning
in a car that was built from scratch overnight. It
might not be sorted to his satisfaction and Kovy was
0.3 faster, but Hamilton is always capable of
pulling out a special time.
Next up date no later than 1 hour before the race on
Sunday.
